Out to Sandown for the Shannons Nationals

Made the trip out to Sandown Raceway on Saturday for the first round of the Shannons Nationals, featuring the Australian Formula 3, Australian GT and GT3 Cup Challenge as the main cetegories on the schedule. Pretty quiet crowd with the V8 Supercars competing just across the Bass Straight in Tasmania on the same weekend, but still the obligatory Mclaren’s, Ferrari’s and plethora of Ford’s and Holden’s parked up in the car park.

The racing in the GT’s was fantastic, so much variety on track and the Mercedes SLS GT (Which sounds unreal!) of Richard Muscat starting from the back meant plenty of passing. Watching the top 4 or 5 guys tip toe their way around the slower competitors was pretty impressive, not only having to get past a slower car, but also keep everyone else behind them at the same time. The Porsche’s and F3’s weren’t terribly exciting on track, plenty of close racing in the Porsche’s, just not a lot of passing, and the F3’s were follow the leader with 5 second intervals between each car it seemed.
